ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥Â’s most comprehensive conference on the stateÂ’s tourism industry will reveal results of a new study on mountain tourism, the latest trends in the family vacation market and how well the state tourism advertising agency did in its 2000 summer campaign. The 2000 ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Tourism Conference, titled "ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Tourism in the New Millennium," will meet Oct. 18-20 at the Doubletree Hotel, 3203 Quebec St., in Denver. Paul Horn, senior vice president and director of research for IBM Corp., will present the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder College of Engineering and Applied ScienceÂ’s second annual Mervyn Young Memorial Lecture at Macky Auditorium, Sept. 14. The 90-minute lecture titled "The Future of Technology" is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session. The event is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Office of Community Relations at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder is asking Boulder area residents to submit lecture topic ideas to help develop future installments of the ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series, aimed at bringing faculty expertise to general public audiences. Because of the diversity of the campusÂ’s academic programs, topics can range anywhere from aerospace engineering to Shakespeare. Popular lecture topics in past years have included smart growth, life in the Caucasus Mountains and the people of ancient Nubia.

Chancellor Richard L. Bynny has invited the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder campus community to an open forum and reception to welcome ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ President Elizabeth Hoffman, the 20th president of the university. The open forum will be held Monday, Sept. 11, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel. President Hoffman will give a brief overview of her initial plans for the university and will field questions from the audience. Following the forum a reception is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Norlin Quad on the lawn in front of Old Main.

Internationally known underwater archaeologist and ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder history Professor Robert Hohlfelder will kickoff the fall 2000 ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with his presentation "Swimming Over Time: A Survey of the Submerged Ruins of Aperlae." All talks in the ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series will be at 7 p.m. in the Chapel at The Academy, located at 970 Aurora Ave. in Boulder. The monthly lectures are free and open to the public.

In recognition of Chicano History Week the United Mexican American Students organization on the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder campus will host a series of panel presentations Sept. 12-14. The annual event will address issues that are important to the Chicano community while revisiting the history of the Chicano activist movement, according to Teresa Estrada, UMAS council chair. The panels are meant to promote cultural education, appreciation and respect. "We always want to make sure that we involve ourselves in teaching the community about our history," Estrada said.

Ross B. Corotis, dean of the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science, has resigned from his position effective at the end of the current academic year, July 31, 2001, Vice Chancellor Phil DiStefano announced today.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder will explore the red planet during "Mars Quest," Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show examines the history of humankindÂ’s exploration of Mars, glancing in at the planet from space and exploring its surface. The show also delves into the question of life on Mars.

The University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder tied for 26th in the 2000 ranking of the nationÂ’s top public four-year institutions in U.S. News & World ReportÂ’s annual Best Colleges issue, moving up from 31st in 1999. ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder was tied with the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ School of Mines, Indiana University-Bloomington, the University of California-Santa Cruz, the University of Delaware, Virginia Tech and Miami University of Oxford, Ohio.

University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder researchers will test the effects of low gravity on two biomedical experiments aboard the upcoming flight of NASAÂ’s space shuttle Atlantis, now slated for liftoff Sept. 8 from Cape Kennedy, Fla. to the International Space Station.
