Biography
Tony Tong is Chair of the Strategy, Entrepreneurship, and Operations (SEO) Division and Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship in the Leeds School of Business. Prior to his current role, he served as the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research. He is the Guggenheim Endowed Chair of Business Design and Innovation.
Professor Tong’s research is in the areas of firm strategy, innovation management, and international business. Specific topics include knowledge and innovation, corporate strategy, digitization, intellectual property rights, and interfirm relationships, often in global and technology contexts. He has published widely in Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Journal of Economics & Management Strategy, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Nature Scientific Data, Organization Science, Research Policy, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Organization, and Strategy Science, among others.
Professor Tong’s interdisciplinary research has won the 2011 Strategic Management Society Best Paper Prize, 2020 ICIS Conference Best Short Paper Award, and the 2021 Best Paper Award of the Journal of Management in Engineering. He has been the principal investigator of two NSF Awards, and the commercialization lead of multiple federal agency grants.
Professor Tong teaches Strategic Management, Global Strategy, International Business, and Technology & Innovation Management in the MBA, Executive, Ph.D., as well as undergraduate programs. He has received multiple teaching awards and recognitions from ֱ, Ohio State, and Purdue. He has also developed highly-recognized teaching materials, including several “bestseller” case studies in Harvard Business Publishing and popular articles on innovation and digital business models in Harvard Business Review. He enjoys working with doctoral students—two of his former Ph.D. students won the prestigious of Strategic Management at the Academy of Management.
Professor Tong is the past Chairperson of the SMS’s Corporate Strategy Interest Group and has served on the Executive Committee of the AOM’s Strategic Management Division. In addition, he has served on the editorial board of many top journals in strategy, innovation, and international business, including Academy of Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Organization, Strategy Science.
