A University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder researcher has been awarded a $525,000 grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to study chromosome movements during cell division, a project that may help lead to new treatments for diseases.

A tour, talks and presentations on a spacecraft built by students at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics that is now set for launch in late summer or early fall will be held at the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Research Park May 15. The event at LASPÂ’s Space Technology Building, which begins at 8:30 a.m., will honor graduating seniors who have worked on the Student Nitric Oxide Explorer satellite. The event includes talks by participating ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ students and faculty as well as Universities Space Research Association President Paul Coleman. USRA is co-sponsoring the mission with NASA.

The University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ and the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) have agreed to a plan that brings the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ campuses into full compliance with hazardous waste regulations addressed in an order issued in December 1994. The compliance plan will be shared with other interested institutions as a model for resolving hazardous waste management issues.

The University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at BoulderÂ’s Center for Environmental Journalism has selected five journalists as Ted Scripps Fellows in Environmental Journalism for the 1997-98 academic year. Starting next fall, the fellows will study environmental science and policy for two semesters at the university.

Eight people were honored with 1997 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards at an April 24 banquet sponsored by the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science. Presented for the 32nd consecutive year, the awards are given to alumni of the university's engineering college for outstanding careers and achievement in academic and professional work. In special cases, non-alums also are recognized with this award for outstanding service to the engineering college.

Four faculty and staff members of the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science have received annual college-wide awards for outstanding achievement for 1997. The Charles Hutchinson Memorial Teaching Award was presented to Professor Delores Etter of the electrical and computer engineering department. Etter was honored for authoring college-level textbooks and for her effective classroom teaching.

HereÂ’s a question for those of you who arenÂ’t afraid of numbers: What is the dollar value of Vail Resorts Inc. and why? This was the problem posed to students at the College of Business and Administration at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder who participated in the third annual Shell Financial Analysis Competition. A portion of grant given to the business college by Shell Corporation is earmarked to reward undergraduates in finance each year.

The Boulder Campus Wellness Wednesday program on May 14 will feature the third annual Poker Walk from noon to 1 p.m. beginning and ending outside the Recreation Center. Staff and faculty will walk or run to five designated campus locations to pick up a playing card. Those drawing the best five-card poker hands will win prizes and everyone will receive a prize for participating. Juice and water will be served at each station on the route.

A team of University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder researchers have combined a unique set of remote-sensing techniques to pinpoint a series of eight previously unknown Paleo-Indian quarries in Montana dating back as far as 10,000 years.
