ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥

High school juniors with diverse backgrounds are invited to apply for a free business leadership program being hosted this summer by the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder College of Business. Applications will be accepted through April 13. Students will spend the week of June 17-23 on the Boulder campus learning about business and working on an advertising campaign for corporate sponsors. Students also will gain new computer skills and get a chance to network with business professionals.

The sounds of music -- how they are created and the rules of physics they follow -- will be the subject of the March 31 ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Wizards show for children to be held at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder. Physicist Jim Faller will use a group of both homemade and real instruments to demonstrate various aspects of "The Physics of Music." The homemade instruments are constructed from a wide range of materials including bamboo, garden hose, plastic pipe, redwood, funnels and doorknobs.

Former acting United States Attorney General, Doug Melamed, will speak at the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ School of Law on Wednesday, April 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in room 154 of the Fleming Law Building. The speech, titled "The New Economy, Intellectual Property, and the Challenges for Antitrust: An Address by Former Acting Assistant Attorney General Doug Melamed," is sponsored by the law school's Silicon Flatirons Telecommunications Program.

In a great show of support for the successful return of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥'s Trivia Bowl, Program Council has amended its original decision to cap team applications at 48 teams with eight alternates, allowing all 64 applying teams to compete in this year's bowl. The 2001 Trivia Odyssey, April 2-6, will be a traditional single-elimination tournament.

Program Council will offer a free concert for ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder students as part of the 2001 Trivia Bowl entertainment featuring Jimmie's Chicken Shack on Thursday, April 5, at 8 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom. Jimmie's Chicken Shack is the band behind the hit, "Do Right," which received extensive airtime on MTV and radio stations throughout the country. The song was featured on the band's most recent album, "Bring Your Own Stereo."

Richard Perdue, professor of tourism management at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder's College of Business, has been elected to the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. Membership in the prestigious academy is limited to 75 scholars worldwide and is based on a candidate's career research achievements. Upon election, Perdue was chosen to serve a two-year term as secretary of the academy.

The ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Shakespeare Festival, ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder's premier summer theatrical program, has announced it will be a sponsor for ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Program Council spring events including the 2001 Trivia Bowl. The ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Shakespeare Festival logo will appear on all Program Council ads and promotions, as well as at the 2001 Trivia Odyssey April 2-6.

The ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Parents Association will honor 17 faculty and staff members April 7 at the Koenig Alumni Center. All the honorees were nominated by ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder undergraduate students for having a significant impact on the students' lives. The ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Parents Association and the Division of Student Affairs are hosting a luncheon for the honored staff and faculty members as well as the nominating students and their parents. Trophies will be presented to all the awardees.

The impending crash of Russia's Mir Space Station should be of little worry to Earthlings as it heads for an expected fiery ending in the southern Pacific Ocean on Friday, according to ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder aerospace engineering Professor Robert Culp.
