Mary Covell Named Associate Director Of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder UMC

Mary Covell, business manager of the University Memorial Center at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder, has been appointed to the position of associate director, according to Carlos Garcia, UMC director. The appointed has been approved by Chancellor Richard Byyny and is effective immediately. She replaces former assistant director J.C. Ancell, who retired in January.

Aurora High School Student Awarded ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Parents Association Scholarship

Ana Gutierrez, a junior ranked second in her class at Aurora Central High School, is this year's recipient of the Leadership, Excellence, Achievement and Diversity scholarship awarded by the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Parents Association. The award was presented to Gutierrez at a July banquet for high school students who successfully completed the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Pre-Collegiate Development Summer Residential Program. The award consists of $10,000 divided into four annual supplements of $2,500.

CATECS Director Vince Micucci To Retire, ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Launches Search For Replacement

The University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder is launching a national search for a director of the Center for Advanced Training in Engineering and Computer Science. Vince Micucci, CATECS director, has announced his retirement, effective Feb. 7, 2003. CATECS, a program of the Division of Continuing Education, serves as the distance learning arm of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science.

ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Launches Search For Communications Director

The University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder has begun a national search for a new executive director of university communications, a position vacated in early July by the departure of Bobbi Barrow who left the university to join Denver Health. Ric Porreca, senior vice chancellor and chief financial officer at ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder, has been named chair of the search committee. Porreca said the campus is in the process of selecting members to serve on the search committee, which will begin work immediately. He expects a new executive director will be named during the fall semester.

Twenty-five elementary and high school science teachers entered a dream laboratory of forests, ponds, streams and wildlife northwest of Boulder July 27 to begin a week of living and breathing Earth science. The teachers are participating in Earthworks, an annual professional development program sponsored by ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥.

ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Seeking Requests From Community Organizations And K-12 Schools For New 'Wish List' Project

Faculty and students at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder may soon be granting wishes for ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ schools and nonprofit and community organizations as part of a new program called the Wish List. In an effort to encourage academic partnerships with ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ communities, ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder is compiling a list of needs and requests from around the state. The Wish List will serve as a resource for faculty and academic programs that want to incorporate experiential learning opportunities into the course curriculum.

Final ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Summer Commencement Ceremony Slated For Aug. 10

The University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder will confer 1,177 degrees during the university's final summer commencement ceremony Saturday, Aug. 10, at 8:30 a.m. on the Norlin Quadrangle. Last winter, the Council of Deans, associate deans, Chancellor Richard L. Byyny and the commencement committee agreed to eliminate the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder August commencement ceremony beginning in 2003, according to Jeanne McDonald, commencement coordinator. "This decision was made due to the low number of participants we have had at the August ceremony," McDonald said.

Arapaho Tribes To Gather For Annual Pow-Wow Festival July 28 At ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder

Northern and Southern Arapaho tribe members will gather for the 'coming back home' pow-wow or "Ce'no'eeckoohuut" beginning at 10 a.m. July 28 on the Norlin Quad at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder. "The pow-wow works to strengthen the bond between ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder and the Arapaho Tribe and promotes an excellent cultural education opportunity for everyone," said Leslee Caballero, co-coordinator for ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder's American Indian Student Services.

Two ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Chefs Win Bronze Medals At National Culinary Conference

Two ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder chefs took home bronze medals in the "mystery basket" competition at the national Chef Culinary Conference held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Paul Houle of the University Club and David Kambic of Sewall Hall won their awards in an event that gave the chefs four hours to prepare a full meal with ingredients that were not revealed until the competition began.
