New CTL learning assessment micro-grants provide funding, expertise to support faculty

Do you have questions about student learning in your course or in a course series? Thinking about your assessment strategy but not sure where to begin? The new Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) learning assessment micro-grants program provides a little funding and a lots of staff expertise to support faculty to carry out small projects for a course or course series.

Recipients will participate in an introductory workshop where they will learn how to identify assessment questions, select or create instruments (e.g. rubrics, pre-post tests, etc.), and use assessment data to answer their questions. A partnership between the CTL and the Office of Data Analytics (ODA) will support faculty to plan and carry out learning assessment projects.

Stephanie Foster, CTL assessment lead, is coordinating the micro-grants. Foster cites the importance of good assessment practices to help instructors understand how well students are achieving the learning outcomes for the course and identify where instruction can be improved. Says Foster, “Our goal is to help faculty approach student learning assessment in a systematic way and think critically about how to make changes to their courses or programs to address student learning needs.â€

Micro-grants will fund up to $300 (for an individual course) or $700 (for a course series or set of courses). Individuals or small teams are encouraged to apply. A maximum of 10 projects will be funded for the spring 2022 semester.
