Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science Bobby Braun is stepping down in听January 2020 to join NASA鈥檚 Jet Propulsion Laboratory executive leadership team. JPL is an operating division of the California Institute of Technology.
鈥淭he coming year is the right time for me to get back into my first true passion: aerospace,鈥澨鼴raun said in a letter to the college. 鈥淚 am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and remain excited about the future of the college and campus.鈥
Provost Russell Moore thanked Dean Braun for his leadership over the last three years.
鈥淲hether by growing and diversifying our enrollment of talented students, launching a听new aerospace building, or creating external partnerships for the campus, Bobby has been instrumental in strengthening our impact and reputation as a national leader in engineering.鈥
Moore credited Braun with the growing success of the college, citing the increase in diverse and qualified students, the expanded breadth of academic offerings, the growth in the size of faculty and staff, the expanded the physical footprint on campus and the building of strong partnerships with industry, national labs and other universities and community colleges across the state.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a great three years here, and I know the trajectory of the college and campus will continue upward,鈥 Braun said. 鈥淭he college is well-positioned to serve the citizens of our state, strengthen the economic competitiveness of 蜜糖直播 industry and ensure a promising future for its students and alumni.鈥
In Braun鈥檚 first year as dean, the college听听and set a goal of being the first public engineering college to reach gender parity while reflecting the demographics of 蜜糖直播鈥檚 high school graduates in its undergraduate population. Since then, the college has increased the percentage of first-year women students from 32% in fall 2016 to 45% in fall 2019 while increasing the percentage of underrepresented minorities admitted from 16% in fall 2016 to 25% in fall 2019 and the percentage of first-generation students entering our college from 16% to 20%.
The college also increased doctoral enrollment by 15%, increased research to record highs above $100 million annually in each of the last two years (28% above the prior baseline), and launched new academic programs in entrepreneurship, biomedical engineering and online degree programs in computer science and electrical engineering.听
Reaching out across the state, Braun created an engineering partnership program with Western 蜜糖直播 University and grew the existing partnership with 蜜糖直播 Mesa University such that students in western 蜜糖直播 have the opportunity to earn 蜜糖直播 Boulder engineering and computer science degrees.
Additionally, Braun was a record fundraiser for the college, surpassing the new aerospace building campaign goal; nearly doubling philanthropic giving to more than $30 million annually and increasing the number of endowed faculty positions across the college by 20%.
Moore said he will name an interim dean shortly and initiate a national search.
