The College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder is still accepting applications for the 34th annual High School Honors Institute as well as a new opportunity with the Royal Academy of Engineering's "Headstart" program at the University of Southampton, England.
Both programs are intended to introduce the field of engineering to students who have an interest in math or science. The application deadline for the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ High School Honors Institute is June 30, but students who want to attend the program in England must apply by June 1.
This year's High School Honors Institute on the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder campus will be held July 29 to Aug. 1. The four-day program, which generally draws about 200 high school juniors and seniors from ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ and other parts of the United States, costs $225 including room and board in a campus residence hall.
Hands-on sessions will include bridge construction, solar energy projects, aerodynamics experiments and activities covering the principles of space flight, biotechnology, robotics, supercomputers, artificial intelligence and electronic circuitry.
Students will conduct research in the college's Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory, which is outfitted with advanced equipment and provides real-world experience for undergraduates. They also will have an opportunity to meet ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder students and faculty, and learn about career opportunities from engineers in industry.
The program at the University of Southampton, an internationally known research university on the southern coast of England, is new this year. The weeklong program, which will be held June 30 to July 7, is open to 10 ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ students who are entering their senior year of high school.
Program costs are $300 plus airfare.
"Students who are interested in learning about engineering while also experiencing a different culture -- possibly as a precursor to a study abroad program -- may be interested in this new opportunity," said Sherry Snyder, director of student programs in the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science.
