Editors: A schedule of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ volunteer reading locations and times is attached.
ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder faculty, staff, students and administration volunteers will visit students in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain school districts as part of Read Across America Day on Friday, March 2.
The National Education Association established the event in 1998 to encourage children and adults across the country to celebrate reading on what would have been the 97th birthday of famed children's author Dr. Seuss. The ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Office of Community Affairs is planning local events to celebrate the day.
ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥'s volunteer readers include Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Phil DiStefano and Dean of Libraries James Williams, who will visit Flatirons Elementary School in Boulder between 8:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., and student athletes who will read to students at Boulder's Casey Middle School from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder fine arts Professor George Rivera and ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ alumni and local artist Tony Ortega will visit Sanchez Elementary School in Lafayette from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to share their children's stories, "A Migrant Child's Dream: Farm Worker Adventures of Cholo, Vato, and Pano" and "Days of the Dead: Aztec Adventures of Cholo, Vato, and Pano." Both books were written by Rivera and illustrated by Ortega.
The ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Book Store will host a birthday party in honor of Dr. Seuss with cake, door prizes, discounts on Dr. Seuss books and story time on March 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Moe's Bagels stores are co-sponsoring "A Bagel for a Book" book drive in connection with Read Across America Day. Customers who bring in a new or gently used children's book to any one of the Moe's Bagels stores in Boulder or Denver from Feb. 28 to March 2 will receive one free bagel with cream cheese (one per person, per visit). All books will be donated to area schools, shelters and early learning centers.
