New student activities kicking-off the Fall 2000 semester will begin on the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥-Boulder Campus following the ChancellorÂ’s convocation on Thursday, Aug. 24th.

Students are encouraged to take part in the "UMC Crawl," an annual party at the University Memorial Center student union that is aimed at welcoming new students, said Bhadra Mitchell, UMC marketing manager. "The goal of the party is to acquaint new students with their student union and to show them a good time."

As part of the "crawl," students who attend the convocation will receive boxed meals compliments of student housing, with coupons from the UMC for free prizes redeemable at the Connection games area, the Forum theater and the Glenn Miller Ballroom.

The UMC Crawl will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 24th as KVÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥, the universityÂ’s student radio station, broadcasts live from the fountain area north of the UMC. A variety of activities will be available to students who visit the UMC, including free pool and bowling from 6:15 p.m. until 10 p.m. in the Connection. Free smoothies, popcorn, cotton candy and other snacks will be provided.

The Program Council will begin programming in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at 7 p.m. and will host the Impulse Comedy Theatre, an improvisational comedy show, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Free movies also will be shown starting at 7 p.m. in the Forum, located on the first floor of the UMC.

Although the UMC is undergoing construction as part of a $25 million expansion and renovation project, students are encouraged to dine around the fountain and inside the dining rooms, Mitchell said. Since the loggia doors are part of the construction site, students will be redirected into the UMC through temporary doors in the dining room, she said.

The UMC will remain open until midnight on the 24th.

For students who crave exercise and entertainment, the Recreation Center will offer special late-night activities on Friday, Aug. 25th, providing non-alcoholic entertainment alternatives, said Patti Kish, assistant coordinator for Recreation Center instruction programs.

Free cardio-kickboxing classes will begin at 8 p.m. and free Latin dance lessons with music provided by D.J. Eddie Pena will begin at 9:30 p.m., according to Kish. Tables will be set up with information about Rec Center activities and the Wardenburg Health Center.

Food and refreshments also will be provided and students will be eligible to win door prizes. The Rec Center will be open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

During ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥Â’s first week of classes beginning Aug. 28, students who visit the Rec Center can sample for free any of the full-semester classes that are offered, such as aerobics, yoga, martial arts, indoor cycling and master swim, Kish said. The open period gives students the opportunity to get accustomed to their class schedules and to decide which activities fit within their schedules.

Two more special late-night events are planned at the Rec Center for Sept. 15 and Oct. 13. For more information about the late-night activities call Patti Kish at 492-6949.
