The WomenÂ’s Studies Program at the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ at Boulder will host an address by leading black feminist sociologist Patricia Hill Collins on Oct. 29.
Collins will speak on “Moving Beyond Gender: Race, Class and Scientific Knowledge,” at 7:30 p.m. in Old Main Chapel.
The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will be held in the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Heritage Center following the presentation.
Collins is a professor of African American Studies and the Charles Phelps Taft Professor of Sociology at the University of Cincinnati. Her first book, “Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness and the Politics of Empowerment,” was awarded the C. Wright Mills Award by the American Sociological Association.
She also co-edited an anthology, “Race, Class and Gender,” that is widely used as an introductory text in undergraduate classes throughout the country.
Professor Collins has taught at several institutions, held editorial positions with professional journals, lectured and published widely, and acted as a consultant for a number of businesses and community organizations.
She currently is completing her third book, “Fighting Words: Black Women, Critical Social Theory and the Search for Justice.”
