Many statistics and data science questions are causal in nature. For example, Does low minimum wage cause poverty? Did the marketing strategy yield higher sales? What is the effect of race on police use of force? These questions seem to require more than just predicting an output variable from a set of input variables. Causal questions require an explanationWhy did a change in the minimum wage lead to a change in poverty? Do sales respond to the marketing strategy? If an individual’s race were different, would their interaction with the police have been different?

The tools used to answer causal questions require non-trivial assumptions about the underlying processes that generate the data. When data come from the social world, the assumptions are often politically and ethically charged. In this talk, we will explore issues in causal modeling. In particular, we will differentiate causal modeling from predictive modeling, explore some key assumptions and techniques to estimate causal effects, and analyze the social and ethical implications of causal modeling.

Are you interested in pursuing a data science degree but are worried you do not have the prerequisite skills? Then, this webinar is for you! The ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Boulder MS in Data Science on Coursera program is a highly interdisciplinary program open to students from a variety of backgrounds – in fact, we have current students from over 50 different industries/academic backgrounds! While we do require you to be knowledgeable on topics, such as Python, R Programming, Calculus, and Linear Algebra, we offer non-credit courses so you can brush up on these skills. Join ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Boulder program staff and current students to learn about how to prepare for (and excel in) a data science graduate program without a STEM background.
