High School Summer Music Academy

High School Summer Music Academy students

The High School Summer Music Academy is an opportunity for talented band, orchestra and piano students from ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ and around the country to receive world-class music instruction in a one-week summer session. Band and orchestra participants are placed into a wind ensemble or string orchestra with a nationally renowned conductor. Select students are divided into one of many small ensembles to gain invaluable chamber music experience. Students will also participate in electives that will serve as preparation for collegiate music degree programs.

Instruction for the academy is provided by renowned guest conductors, ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Boulder faculty members, guest artists and graduate students of our College of Music.

Note: The following information applies to band and orchestra students only. Piano students: Please visit High School Summer Music Academy: Piano.

More

My student will graduate 8th grade in the weeks before this summer’s camp. Which camp should they attend?
This student would be eligible to attend the piano program at the High School Summer Music Academy. If not a piano student, they would attend the Middle School Summer Music Academy.

Do you offer discounts on camp registration?
We offer the scholarship opportunities listed above; no other discounts are available at this time.

Why do you ask for a sample of my student’s playing for the High School SMA, but not the Middle School SMA?
The High School Summer Music Academy is unique in that we see a greater range of playing abilities and greater variance from year to year. Hearing students ahead of time helps us to ensure we have music that suits their level.

Our family also wants to do another activity during the week of camp. Are students allowed to leave camp?
For the security of our camps, students are not permitted to leave camp except at designated check-out times for their group (residents or commuters). Exceptions can be made in emergency situations; please contact us right away and we’ll coordinate with you.

What if my student says they want to come home from camp early?
Our camps are designed to challenge, encourage and grow students. This may be new for them and sometimes campers are uncomfortable at first. If your student expresses to you that they are struggling for whatever reason, please let us know right away, before deciding to bring them home early. Many times, we are able to make adjustments that can help the camper enjoy their experience and feel proud that they made it through something that was initially difficult.
