The College of Music is excited to announce that will join our faculty as assistant professor of saxophone in fall 2023, succeeding longtime Associate Professor of Saxophone Professor Tom Myer who retired in May 2022.
“I’m beyond thrilled to join the faculty at the University of ֱ Boulder College of Music,” shares Mertens, an active clinician and an advocate for new music. “While the City of Boulder, the campus and the facilities are all absolutely incredible, I’m most excited to begin working with the college’s faculty, staff and students.
“The community is forward-thinking, collaborative and fun, and I look forward to growing with all these wonderful people.”
He adds, “I’m honored to continue the legacy of Professor Tom Myer and excited about the future of the College of Music saxophone studio in an environment that prioritizes inclusive excellence.”
Mertens currently serves on the faculty of the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) and previously taught at Hastings College. He has been a guest artist at institutions such as the Conservatorio Plurinacional de Música, Oklahoma State University, South Dakota State University and Texas A&M International University.
Mertens earned degrees from The University of Texas at Austin–Butler School of Music, Hastings College and Kunitachi College of Music.
