Letter from CMCI Founding Dean Lori Bergen
Dear CMCI Community,
I’m writing to you to acknowledge two precious rays of hope during these challenging times. Today, we learned the Supreme Court of the United States announced its decision to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). The Court ruled that the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to rescind DACA in September 2017 violated the Administrative Procedures Act.Ìý
On Monday, we learned of the landmark decisionÌýfinding that federal law prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Court ruled that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or transgender status is illegal under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
These critical decisions provide a small measure of support for some of our most vulnerable students, staff, and faculty, and they call upon us to remain vigilant and proactive in our efforts to ensure that all members of our CMCI community can thrive.
CMCI unequivocally supports our DACA and LGBTQIA+ community members. WeÌýapplaudÌýthese decisions that affect our students and community and will continue to work together to address issues of inequality, racism and discrimination. More to come.
Be safe and be well,
Lori
