In northern Greece on the afternoon of November 8, 1977, Manolis Andronikos opened an unlooted tomb, revealing spectacular grave goods.ج‎ Soon, he announced he’d found not only the tombs of ancient Macedonian royalty, but the bones of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great.

A multinational museum tour was planned with a glossy, illustrated coffee-table book and a BBC Documentary.ج‎ Yet cracks in the identification soon appeared, and scholars began asking:
