Parental Leave

Information regarding Administrative Policy Statement 5019 – Parental Leave for Faculty and University Staff can be found on the . Furthermore, additional information can be found on the .Ìý

  • Tenure-track faculty members who will be the primary caregiver for their child may request one semester’s leave at full pay, using no sick leave, within twelve months of birth or adoption.Ìý
    • Parental Leave may be taken by eligible employees for the following medical reasons:Ìý
      • The birth of a child;ÌýÌý
      • Care of a newborn child;
      • The placement and care of a child from adoption or foster care;Ìý
  • Parental leave stops the tenure clock for one year.ÌýÌý
    • University policy stipulates that the tenure clock will be stopped only twice for parental leave purposes. However, faculty may be reviewed for tenure during their original review year under the campus' Early Tenure Policy, assuming their record meets the standards.Ìý
  • The policy is meant to minimize the disruption of students' education that occurs when faculty must be replaced by another instructor.ÌýÌý
    • It is the intention of the policy that faculty will arrange parental leaves, when possible, to coincide with the semester calendar. Splitting parental leave across multiple semesters is discouraged.Ìý Sick leave accruals will be used for partial semesters, and parental leave will be requested for the next full term.Ìý Parental leave may be requested for up to one year after the birth of the child.Ìý
  • Faculty requesting parental leave may be eligible for FMLA and/or FAMLI coverage. For information on these programs, please contact the Central HR leave team at leave@cu.edu.Ìý
    • Eligibility for FMLA and/or FAMLI coverage is not required to be eligible for paid parental leave from the College.Ìý
