The dean’s list of advice: The key to a positive experience on campus

Devin Cramer, acting dean of students and associate vice chancellor for student affairs
As your acting dean of students, I look forward to advocating for you and supporting you during this academic year. I hope you are all having a great fall semester so far.

I have had the honor of being a Buff for the past 12 years. One of my favorite parts of being a part of this community is working with students directly, supporting your development and sharing resources that enhance your college experience.

I’ve worked in various roles during my time at ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Boulder, and each year I’ve observed something significant regarding students who have positive experiences on campus. I’ve noticed that students who found ways to get involved often have better experiences than students who did not get involved.

I know this because of the many stories I’ve heard from students. They’ve told me how getting involved, both on campus and in the Boulder community, has helped them during their time in college. Whether it’s joining an organization, volunteering, attending events or working a part-time job, getting involved has many benefits. It can help you make close friends, have things to do in your free time and gain work experience or skills to add to your resume.

Involvement can look different for everyone, and it’s never too late to join that group or try something new—there are always opportunities. As we move further into the fall semester, I encourage you to think about how you’re getting involved and explore your options this year. Whether you just started at ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ or you’re in your final year, no matter your interests or academic program, I guarantee that there is something here for you.

To help narrow down your options or find the right fit, consider what you’d like to get out of being involved and what you’d like to focus your time on. Here are some ideas depending on what your goals may be:

If you’re wanting to make new friends…

  • Join a student organization: Whether you’re interested in politics, outdoor activities, artistic expression or social justice, there’s a student organization for you to meet Buffs with similar interests. to explore student groups by topic or alphabetical list. You can also visit Fraternity & Sorority Life to check out which councils are still recruiting new members.
  • Attend student events: Each semester, there are hundreds of events, workshops and opportunities for students to meet fellow Buffs and have some fun. Review upcoming student events and download the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Boulder Life mobile app to stay up to date with what’s happening.
  • Join the Dean of Students Leadership & Values Council: Share ideas, counsel and feedback regarding issues that affect the student body, while also engaging in leadership development and mentorship opportunities. Learn more about joining the council.

If you’re wanting to get the most out of living in Boulder…

  • Volunteer: Not only can you make a positive difference in your community, but there are also many volunteer opportunities to fit your schedule. Visit the Volunteer Resource Center (VRC) to learn more, check out ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ in the Community for one-time service opportunities or consider applying for the to make a larger investment of your volunteer time.
  • Support local businesses and attend events: Boulder is a fun city to live in with plenty to do. Take time to explore your local community and take advantage of the great food, shopping and entertainment while you’re here.

If you’re wanting a unique academic experience…

  • Check out research opportunities: ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Boulder has a history of undergraduate research efforts with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). UROP offers flexible funding options for undergraduate students in all majors and the chance to develop rapport with faculty.
  • Attend faculty office hours: Your professors may be aware of unique academic opportunities specific to your college, school or program. Visit their office hours to ask how you can get involved.

If you’re wanting to gain work experience for your resume…

  • Work on campus: Student on-campus jobs offer flexible scheduling to fit around your classes and other commitments. Plus, it’s a convenient way to meet new people and gain work experience.
  • Attend career fairs: Whether you’re looking for an internship or a job after graduation, career fairs are a great way to make progress in your search. All ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Boulder career fairs are open to all students, regardless of major or year in school. These events allow you to meet with employers who are hiring for a variety of positions.

As you explore, there are many campus resources here to help you get involved and find what’s right for you:

I’m here for you as well and can help connect you to the right resources and opportunities based on your goals. Take care of yourselves, and let’s make this a great semester.
