Community Sex Ed

In partnership with Boulder Valley Health Center, we seek to provide community-based expansive sex education programming to youth about sexualities, bodies, consent, and empowerment from an intersection lens focused on social justice and delivered in an inclusive and affirming space. The programs, like Sex Ed Summer Camp, (i) promote social and emotional learning through sex education that is delivered outside the confines of school district standards -- which is often limited by district resources and is less oriented toward youth interests and rapidly changing sociocultural climates; (ii) center the diverse experiences of individuals who are often underrepresented in sex education (e.g., people of color, sex/gender and sexual orientation minority individuals, differently-abled bodies); (iii) reduce access barriers to important sexual health and safety information by offering the program free; and (iv) engage caregivers to increase communication and connection between caregivers and youth around the often uncomfortable topic of sexual wellness. The research seeks to (1) identify youth and caregiver needs and interests in community-based sex education, (2) identify areas for program improvement, (3) understand the changing dynamics of youth and caregiver relationships across the course of the program, and (4) highlight areas of growth in youth when provided with expansive sex education.
