The National Academy of Music named Mike Barnett (PhDMus’04) winner of the International Music Prize for Excellence in Composition for his piano concerto, Lucifer Rising. Barnett is serving as composer-in-residence with the Fauxharmonic Digital Orchestra in Boston. He has performed at many major venues, and in addition to composing, Mike records regularly as a heavy metal drummer.

Director of opera at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk (PhDMus’04) was honored by the National Opera Association for her production of Benjamin Britten’s The Burning Fiery Furnace. It placed first nationally among other universities and colleges in the opera production competition. She lives in Fultondale, Ala.

Baby boy Caspian Julius was born on Sept. 30 to parents Marlon Reis (Engl’04) and Jared Polis, a U.S. congressman. Marlon and baby C.J. will have videoconferences with Jared when he travels to Washington, according to a Denver Post article. The family lives in Boulder.

Upon graduating Hannah Baynham (Soc’04) moved to Hong Kong to teach English for several years. She is director of a Montessori school for Tibetan refugees in Dharamsala, India, where the Dalai Lama lives. She also is in the process of starting a school in a secluded settlement of Tibetan yak herders in the Gansu province of China.

Laura Englert Eccles (Mgmt’04) found her mountain man in Erik Eccles (Fin’00). The couple married in July 2010 in Lake Tahoe, Calif. Laura has a marketing job at Apple and is completing her MBA at Berkeley. Erik followed his entrepreneurial dreams and started his own technology company in 2009, which has since been acquired by Cisco. They enjoy spending their free time in Truckee, Calif.

Aba Arthur (Thtr’05) plays Abena in the new musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s famed Pulitzer-winning novel, The Color Purple. Arthur received personal coaching from Oprah Winfrey while working on set. Darren Mueller (Mus’05) has just published his book At the Vanguard of Vinyl: A Cultural History of the Long-Playing Record in Jazz. Mueller’s work examines how musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus leveraged the jazz industry’s adoption of the long-playing record (LP) to redefine the uneven power relations of the heavily segregated music business.

In April, Erich Schubert (Jour’05; MA’08) was named vice president of communications and content for the Denver Broncos. Entering his 16th season with the Broncos, Erich works closely with the club’s chief communications officer and chief marketing officer. In addition to his involvement with the team’s day-to-day football, corporate and internal communications plans, Erich oversees the content department for the Broncos, which in 2022 became the first NFL franchise to win a Webby Award, often regarded as the internet’s highest honor. He began his career with the Broncos as a media relations intern in 2008 after working in the ĂŰĚÇÖ±˛Ą Boulder Sports Information Office with David Plati (´ł´ÇłÜ°ů’82).
