Rocky Mountains, a Self – Portrait
By Kent Gunnufson (Mgmt'69)
(Mountain Magazine; 2022)
At eight years old Kent Gunnufson photographed Lower Yosemite Falls with his father’s manual camera. Later after graduating from college, he sacrificed his professional career to work the construction trades in the harsh, cold environment at 10,000 feet in order to ski and pursue alpine photography.
In Rocky Mountains – A Self-Portrait, not only does Gunnufson offer an inside look at the ski community’s little known “golden era,” but also takes us on his personal journey to master the dramatic black-and-white landscape.
Quotes from the photographic community paired with images not only entertain, but reinforce and clarify the creative path of the author. Minor White states a postulate of photography that
“…all photographs are self-portraits.”
