Remote Sensing
Remote Sensing is the process of detecting and monitoring the physical characteristics of an area by measuring its reflected and emitted radiation at a distance, typically from a satellite or aircraft. Spacecraft sensors provide a global perspective and enhance our understanding of the Earth’s surface, gravity field, oceans, atmosphere, and space. NSI research in this area includes the following:
- Characterizing sea ice and the Arctic
- Automating the ingestion of commercial imagery for DOD partners
- Identifying ionospheric disturbances from man-made hazards and natural events
Missions: ISR, Defense
Challenges: Atmospheric correction, calibration
ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Strengths: GNSS, small satellites
