The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy will host attorney and commentator Mark Pulliam for an event on Thurs. March 14. Pulliam's lecture, "The Exploitation of Labor and Other Myths," will cover themes related to the United States economy and labor market.

Pulliam's discussion will present a non-technical overview of common misconceptions about labor unions. His argument will draw from labor economics, political philosophy, labor history, and the law. Collectively, these concepts govern labor relations in America.

Pulliam is an attorney and commentator, who has had work featured in the Wall Street Journal, City Journal, and the National Review. Pulliam is also a contributing editor to Law & Liberty. He is a graduate from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin.

Students, faculty, and members of the public are encouraged to attend the lecture. The scheduled presentation will take place in Hale Science, room 230, beginning at 5:30 pm. The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy will host NYT best-selling author Heather Mac Donald on Feb. 13, for her lecture based on her book "The Diversity Delusion." Mac Donald will be the first to speak as part of the CWCTP's semester-long event dialogue series focusing on American identities.

Mac Donald's lecture will cover material from her book "The Diversity Delusion." Mac Donald will discuss her belief that ideas spread through higher education, relating to identity, have undermined humanistic values, fueled intolerance, and widened divisions in our larger culture. She will argue that dialogue that challenges these institutions is being silenced and that a belief in America’s endemic racism and sexism is increasing the growth of these problems. Mac Donald offers the solution to return to a more open-minded inquiry and form of expression that stems from classic liberal pursuits. She believes that from those principles, everyone can discover a common humanity.

Mac Donald is the Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute. She is a contributing editor at the City Journal and is a New York Times best-selling author. Her work covers topics related to higher education, immigration, homelessness, race relations, and criminal justice. Her content has consistently appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times.

Students, faculty, and members of the public are encouraged to attend the lecture. The scheduled presentation will take place in UMC, room 235, beginning at 7:00 pm. The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy is hosting an event in congruence with the College of Media, Communication and Information on Thursday, Feb. 7. A panel of individuals associated with both the journalism and communications fields will cover topics related to "Truth, Politics, and the Press."

News producer Kelsey Harkness, editor Amy Westfeldt, and communications scholar Roderick Hart will all comment on the changing role of the press in modern American society. The panelists will discuss and debate ideas related to the growing conflict with social discourse. They will consider whether or not the press is to blame for growing hostility and debate the changes that need to be made in terms of the news coverage and the telling of truth from a journalistic standpoint.

Kelsey Harkness is the senior news producer at The Daily Signal, a conservative political journalism website that is published by The Heritage Foundation. Her reporting coverage focuses primarily on immigration, education, the economy, and conservative feminism. She is a regular contributor to The Federalist and Fox News and is a fellow at the Steamboat Institute.

Amy Westfeldt is the managing editor of NewsGuard. NewsGaurd is an online service that is designed to address the fake news crisis by using trained journalists to analyze, review, and rate more than 7,500 news and information sites that are accessed and shared in the U.S. She has worked for the Associated Press and helped the agency produce a fact check of false claims fixture in partnership with Facebook.

Roderick Hart is a professor of Government and holds the Shivers Chair in Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. Hart is an expert on media and politics and has authored or edited 15 books related to civic dialogue and political matters.

The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy is hosting an event on Thursday, Jan. 31. Director Brian Doerries will be conducting his talk, "The Theater of War, What ancient Greek Tragedies Can Teach Us Today."

Doerries lecture will cover material from his book The Theater of War, What Ancient Greek Tragedies Can Teach Us Today. He will discuss how the power of tragedies transcend time and do so to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. As stated in Doerries book, "Stories can help us heal and possibly even change before it's too late." He will also discuss trauma beyond that associated with the conflict of war and will cover trauma related to racial justice.

Brian Doerries is the co-founder and artistic director for Theater of War Productions. Theater of War Productions works with actors across many mediums to present dramatic readings from classic Greek tragedies. Each presentation is followed by an open discussion that tackles social issues that are confronted in the presentation. Productions are aimed at service members, veterans, caregivers, and families that are dealing with the personal effects of tragedy and war. In 2017, Doerries was also named the current Public Artist in Residence for the City of New York. During his two-year residency, he will present 60 of his Theater of War Productions to people in all five of the city's boroughs.

��ֱ�� Performing Arts Presents "Hecuba: A world premiere adaptation by Diane Rayor" from Friday, November 2- Sunday, November 11 in the
University Theatre at the ��ֱ�� Boulder University of Theatre & Dance.

Years of violence and war have stripped Hecuba—Queen of Troy—of all she holds dear. In this adaptation of Euripides’ bleakest drama, Hecuba grieves her first born son killed in combat, and exacts revenge as her daughter is sacrificed to appease the gods and honor her son’s killer. Tickets start at $20.

Results

The production took place in the University Mainstage for a total of eight performances where close to 1,000 people saw the show.

HE��ֱ��BA was presented by Euripides as part of our Department of Theatre & Dance mainstage season. The preparation process for HE��ֱ��BA included the June workshop series and initial reading of the script with the translator, the mask creation and training process, creating of original music with live musicians onstage, and the continued collaboration of creating the story TOGETHER in the seven week rehearsal process and two-week run of the show. The students and faculty were engaged in the process together every step of the way. Overall, it was a very rich process that yielded much for our department and students. Diane Rayor was present in the rehearsal process for 12 rehearsals to work on the script.

The Center for Western Civilization, Thought and Policy funds research and educational initiatives that contribute to critical reflection on the development of Western civilization. All ��ֱ�� Boulder faculty and students are eligible to apply. If you are interested in applying for a CWCTP faculty grant, deadlines are rolling throughout the year.

On Friday evening, Bing delivered a lecture titled "Tombs of Poets’ Minor Characters" to an audience of 35 in which he broadened his own earlier study of the memorializing impulse of Hellenistic poets by considering a set of epigrams that function as epitaphs of fictional characters. Focusing on Sappho’s Doricha, the children of Medea, and the daughters of Lykambes from Archilochus, Bing argued that the funerary epigrams of these minor characters are metafictions of the texts in which they appear. Each metafiction assumes a different memorializing form: Doricha is venerated with a real monument (i.e., the third pyramid of Giza), Medea's children are commemorated with a structure that was no longer standing but still preserved in the written and oral tradition, and the daughters of Lykambes are honored with a monument that only exists in literature. With these examples, Bing sought to reveal the different ways in which Hellenistic poets preserved and respected the poetic past.

The Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy is hosting an event on Thurs., Oct. 11. Gerald Russello will be speaking as an invited guest on behalf of the Visiting Scholars in Conservative Thought & Policy program addressing the late Russell Kirk's views on conservatism in America.

The lecture, Imagination Rules the World: Russel Kirk and Conservatism will discuss conservative thinker Russell Kirk's focus on how his views of conservatism placed him at odds with a portion of the conservative movement. Kirk's ideology of imagination rejected the idea big government and big business and focused on reviving moral principles in which societies and individuals structure their lives.

Russell Kirk was the author of 32 texts on political theory, education, cultural criticism, and the history of ideas. Kirk was the founding editor of the educational quarterly The University Bookman, a journal used to review books and those that support the renewal of culture, as well as the common good.

The lecture will be headed by The University Bookman's current editor Gerald Russello. Russello has published or edited five books, one of which dissects Russell Kirk's concept of the postmodern imagination. He also has had reviews or articles published in The Wall Street Journal, The Hedgehog Review, The Literary Review, and many others. Russello has been an adjunct professor of the Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University and has clerked for justices on the New Jersey Supreme Court and the United States Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

What is a Catholic approach to immigration? Join Denver’s Bishop Jorge Rodriguez for a discussion of this politically contentious, but critically important issue.

Bishop Jorge Rodriguez is the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Denver. Born in Merida, Yucatan in Mexico, Bishop Rodriguez earned his doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome. He served as Dean of the Theology Department of the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome from1994-1997. He has taught Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University, at the Pontifical Institute Regina Mundi and at the Institute for Religious Sciences at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. From 2006 to 2014 he was Vice Rector and Professor at Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary of Denver. He also served as Pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Thornton, ��ֱ��, from 2014 to 2017. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Denver in 2016 and Vicar for Clergy in 2017.

Buckley’s talk will discuss why many of America’s most prominent conservatives opposed Trump’s nomination and candidacy for president. Buckley’s lecture will also cover material from his new book, “Republican Workers Party,” and discuss how a new kind of conservatism is taking shape in America.

Buckley is a former campaign and transition advisor to President Trump. He has authored nine books and is a columnist for the New York Post. He is a consistent contributor to the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the American Conservative, and many other publications. Buckley is also a frequent guest on network shows like Morning Joe, CNN, Rush Limbaugh, and NPR.

Buckley is a Foundation Professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University and teaches subjects in bankruptcy, corporations, and secured lending. He has been a visiting fellow at the University of Chicago Law School and has taught at universities in Montreal and Paris.
