Printed Paper Markers

We investigate the intersection of paper and computer vision for tangible interfaces. Through our exploration, we leverage various characteristics of paper to create a variety of structures that support tangible interactions by concealing and revealing printed fiducial markers. We also investigate how these structures enable untethered functional physical inputs, such as push buttons and sliders. With these material insights, we develop tangible interface applications, including interactive data physicalizations and functional paper prototypes. At the Designing Interactive Systems Conference (DIS '20), Printed Paper Markers received an Honorable Mention Award for Best Pictorial Paper as well as an Honorable Mention Award for Best Demo Submission. The latter award was based not only on the quality of the research, but also on how the researchers adapted their demo materials to the format of a digital online exhibition, according to the conference demonstration chairs.
