Computer-Aided Knolling

A corkboard displays various knolling pattern. A small clear display shelf is to the right containing various small figurines.

"Knolling" is the art of arranging objects at right angles, and these two computational design projects bring algorithmic optimization to this creative process. "Object-Oriented (Shelf) Programming" creates compact arrangements of uniquely shaped objects and generates custom, flat-pack shelving to display them, and "CompactPack" generates efficient packaging layouts for irregularly shaped items, securing them inside boxes with CNC cut paper inserts. Both projects showcase how digital technologies can complement traditional design practices, opening new possibilities for both functional and aesthetic arrangements.
