Though the pandemic preventedÌýan in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2021, graduating students andÌýtheir families and friends were invited to a livestreamed ceremonyÌýhonoring theirÌýaccomplishments onÌýThursday, May 6 at 3 p.m.ÌýThis is the recording of the ceremony, which includes welcoming remarks by ATLAS Director Mark D Gross; an address by Donna Auguste,Ìýwho graduated from ATLAS in 2019Ìýwith herÌýPhD; individual recognition of each graduating student; and an informal collection ofÌýpersonal farewell and congratulatory messages.Ìý

The ceremony officially recognizes students completingÌýrequirements for the following courses of study:

Donna Auguste, ÌýCEO, Auguste Research Group

donna augusteDonna Auguste earned her PhD in Technology, Media and Society from the University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥'s College of Engineering and Applied Science, ATLAS Institute, in 2019. She returned to academia after a distinguished career as an engineer, data scientist, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Since completing her doctorate,Ìýshe founded Auguste Research Group near San Diego, California, where she is CEO.ÌýAuguste Research Group conducts research involving sensors and actionable data,Ìýand advocates for diversity in STEM education. Auguste and her team teach hands-on STEM workshops for children, with a focus on including children from communities that are underrepresented in technical fields, including Black, Latinx, indigenous, neuro-diverse and Deaf.ÌýIn 2001, Auguste founded the Leave a Little Room Foundation, a non-profit organization that, for 10 years, provided housing, schools, electricityÌýand medical care for members of impoverished communities around the world. Earlier in her career, Auguste co-founded Freshwater SoftwareÌýand served as a senior engineering manager at Apple Computer, where she led the software engineering team that developed the Apple Newton, the first personal digital assistant and a forerunner to the iPhone.
