Each year, the Applied Mathematics department at ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Boulder (APPM) attracts incredible graduate students from around the nation. In 2010, the National Research Council ranked APPM as the sixth top program in the country, and the department continues to score highly across many organizations and criteria. The city of Boulder is a prime place for innovative research due in part to its local, world-class institutions such as the National Center for Atmospheric Research, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Many Ph.D. students have conducted their research at these, and other, groundbreaking institutions. For these reasons, in addition to our impressive faculty, our graduate program is in high demand. This year, eleven students will be joining the department. Our new graduate students will be exploring five areas of study and research: Computational Mathematics, Dynamical Systems and Mathematical Biosciences, Nonlinear Phenomena, Physical Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Probability.

Though our new graduate students have now chosen applied mathematics as their focus, very few began in applied mathematics. Only Michael Ramsey and Fortino Garcia have undergraduate degrees in applied mathematics. The majority graduated with degrees in mathematics, like David Gunderman, Caleb Miller, Lucia Minah Yang, Alan Medinger, Allan Gardner, and Jeremy Thompson. Others have degrees in various engineering fields, such as Mingyu Hu,  Osman Malik, and Ryan Jones. Many of these students had additional areas of focus during their undergrad, ranging from physics to music.

These students also have a wide range of interests. David Gunderman, Fortino Garcia, and Ryan Jones are musicians who play the piano, saxophone, and drums respectively. Sports such as swimming, basketball, rock climbing, and running are important to Caleb Miller, Mingyu Hu, Lucia Minah Yang, Michael Ramsey, and Allan Gardner. Some enjoy using technology for gaming and coding, like Osman Malik and Jeremy Thompson. A sense of humor is also rampant among this group; Alan Medinger and Fortino Garcia claim that eating is one of their main hobbies.

Because of these impressive and diverse new graduate students, and a distinguished faculty, the 2016/2017 year is bound to exciting.
